Telegram for iOS and Android updated with new features

NEW DELHI: Encrypted instant messaging service Telegram has started rolling out an important update for its iOS and Android apps. The update bumps the app version number to 3.15 and introduces some new features for easy access to certain options.

The update allows Telegram users to pin important conversations to the top of their inbox. This can be useful for teams that collaborate on Telegram. Since the chat is pinned on top, users don’t have to launch the app and scroll down to find it.

To pin a chat, users can simply long tap on the chat (Android) or swipe left (iOS) and tap the ‘pin’ option.

One of the highlights of the update is that users can now link their Telegram account with other services using the If This Then That (IFTTT) integration. This feature works across services like Instagram, Twitter, Gmail and Pocket. Some of the other important apps supported are Spotify, Pinterest, Dropbox, Google Drive, Nest and Philips Hue.

Telegram claims that it is the first messaging app to fully support IFTTT integration.

“Unlike most services, we allow two-way interactions: You can control other services via Telegram, or receive notifications and content like photos and videos when they do something,” reads the official blog post.
For those unaware, IFTTT is a service that combines two or more services and automatically posts content on multiple platforms based on a single command. Using this, people can get notified on Telegram when they receive an email or get @mentioned on Twitter. They can also post a photo on Instagram and set it to automatically post it on Telegram as well. Tweeting new posts from the Telegram channel is also possible.
On Android, the update introduces high-precision rotation and cropping features in the photo editor for better alignment, a new player for YouTube videos with picture-in-picture mode and the ability to forward messages and media to secret chats.
