Permanent Account Number (PAN) is unique, national, and permanent. As a universal identification key, PAN helps the tax department monitor all financial transactions of high net worth individuals and thereby prevent tax evasion.
It may be noted that PAN card is unaffected by a change of address, even between states in India. It is issued by the Indian Income Tax Department under the supervision of the Central Board for Direct Taxes (CBDT). It also serves as an important ID proof.
One must apply for change, update or correction in PAN when they want to make some changes or corrections in their existing PAN details such as change in applicant name, on account of marriage or due to spelling mistake, change in father’s name, change in date of birth and change of address.
Now, people can go for paperless address update in PAN card as the department is offering address update in PAN through Aadhaar e-KYC. This facility is free of cost and it can be used by those users who want to update their address in PAN database as per Aadhaar.
